Join us for an exciting field trip to celebrate World Wetlands Day on Saturday 2 February.
This Biodiversity Hawke’s Bay event is in partnership with Department of Conservation and NZ Landcare Trust and is an awesome chance to experience the beautiful Rotoroa and Rototuna (Kaweka lakes) in the Forest Park. A free bus will take you to and from this event where you will hear from local experts and have the chance to see first-hand the importance of these wetlands to the biodiversity of the region.
Why this event?
World Wetlands Day is an international event to celebrate the importance of wetlands worldwide. The 2nd of February marks the date of the adoption of the 1971 Convention on Wetlands in the Iranian city of Ramsar. The Ramsar Secretariat provides outreach materials to help raise public awareness about the importance and value of wetlands.
Climate change is one of the most pressing problems facing humanity and our planet. 'Wetlands and Climate Change', the theme to celebrate World Wetlands Day in 2019, draws attention to the vital role of wetlands as a natural solution to cope with climate change.
Come along and have a great day out while you learn and explore the lakes!
Free bus booked out!
The location is a bit of a drive so we have organised a free bus for everyone who registered by 30 Jan. The bus will be leaving the Napier from NAPIER MUSEUM on Marine Parade at 8.30am and will be returning by 3.30pm (Please be there by 8.15am). Thank you to Nimon’s for their generous discount on the bus hire for the day. As the theme for this event is ‘Wetlands and Climate Change’, it is our recommendation that we can all do your bit to reduce emissions and catch the bus ... and it's a fun way to meet people too! (If you are driving into town to catch the bus, we recommend you park in the Regional Council carpark to avoid parking meters and walk up to the i-SITE.) If you drive up, we'll meet you at the carpark at 10.00am.
Even though the bus is now full, you can still attend the day if you wish to drive.
The day requires a moderate level of fitness (there's a small section where there is a steep descent to the lake edge).
Guest speakers include Matt Brady (DOC), Nathan Burkepile (NZ Landcare Trust), Mike Lusk, and Dr. Amelia McQueen (EIT)
What to Bring:
